Kurz notiert: Marken-Racks von RITTAL bei Ebay zu verkaufen
Wir wollen in unserem Unternehmens-Blog nicht unerwähnt lassen, dass Giga-Hosting derzeit zahlreiche, äußerst robuste Marken-Racks der Firma RITTAL zu verkaufen hat.
Soeben wurde eine Auktion auf Ebay eingestellt, in der die ersten sechs der insgesamt 20 zum Verkauf stehenden Racks angeboten werden.
Der Startpreis pro Rack mit 42 Höheneinheiten beträgt gerade einmal 200,-- EUR inkl. Umsatzsteuer - ein Schnäppchen, wenn man sich den Originalpreis von weit über 1000 EUR pro Rack vor Augen führt.
Die Ebay-Auktion ist ab sofort hier (click!) zu finden, sie dauert nur 10 Tage. Wer die Racks sofort haben will, kann sie auch für insgesamt 2.400 EUR "sofort kaufen" - immernoch ein großes Schnäppchen.
Wer nun aber denkt, dass Giga-Hosting.biz nicht mehr genügend Server unterzustellen hat und sich gar auf dem absteigenden Ast befindet, liegt falsch: Die Racks müssen gerade deshalb weichen, weil der bislang durch sie belegte Platz im Rechenzentrum für neue Schränke unserer (Haupt-)Serverfarm unmittelbar benötigt wird. Giga-Hosting steuert derzeit auf eine Serveranzahl von 2000 Maschinen im Rechenzentrum zu, womit rund 50 % der Kapazität unseres ersten Rechenzentrums belegt sind.
What are the advantages of an external data center!
Last week I initiated on our facebook fanpages Giga Hosting and Giga International a small survey on the topic „server outsourcing“. The response of course could have been a bit bigger, but at least 14 people have made their voices; so I take this opportunity to write a short blog post about the benefits of an external data center.
Actually, why do we, Giga Hosting, exist? And why do more and more outsource their server structure?
First of all the cost factor has to be mentioned. The purchase of an infrastructure comparable with modern data centers requires significant investment. So if one makes the decision for an own data center perhaps these acquisition costs must be provided instead of investing in strategic products.
Furthermore the administrative costs should be named aswell - this includes the maintenance and management of infrastructure and hardware.
Many of our customers rely on our wide range of hosting solutions in order to keep their investment costs low. Because we design individual server environments that are tailored to special needs of each customer. Whether they need dedicated or virtualized machines - they pay only what they actually need for their projects.
As you can see the main criteria for server outsourcing are "Low investment costs," "Fast and redundant connection" and "Higher performance".
But there is one very important advantage that benefits mainly Giga-Hosting: our competitive products.
Our efforts for existing on the market in such a successfull way have a positive effect on our customers; because we are always working on better conditions, even better prices and more powerful products.

Was sind die Vorteile eines externen Rechenzentrums!
Letzte Woche habe ich über unsere beiden Facebook Seiten Giga Hosting und Giga International eine kleine Umfrage zum Thema „Server Outsourcing“ gestartet. Die Resonanz hätte natürlich etwas größer sein können, aber 14 Personen haben immerhin ihre Stimmen abgegeben, was mir wiederum Anlass gibt, einen kurzen Blogbeitrag zu den Vorteilen eines externen Rechenzentrums zu schreiben.
Warum gibt es uns, die Giga- Hosting GmbH eigentlich? Und warum entscheiden sich immer mehr, ihre Serverstruktur auszulagern.
Ganz klar an erster Stelle sind die Kostenfaktoren zu nennen. Die Anschaffung einer mit modernen Rechenzentren vergleichbaren Infrastruktur setzt erhebliche Investitionskosten voraus. Diese müssen von Unternehmen erst einmal erbracht werden, statt anderweitig z.B. für strategische Projekte eingesetzt werden zu können.
Nicht zuletzt sind die administrativen Kosten zu nennen, die die Instandhaltung und Verwaltung von Infrastruktur und Hardware veranschlagen.

A legend says “Good Bye”: Dedicated Server XL
An era is just about to draw to a close. The GIGA Dedicated Server XL, which has been a successfull contributor to our server fleet for years, will vanish from our portfolio shortly.
This XL rootserver will only remain available for ordering from our homepage for a short while. You have got just a few more days left to grab a hold of this server at a monthly rate of 44.99 EUR. Giga-International will not offer any root server afterwards at such a low monthly rental fee.
For many many years, actually for almost a decade, the Dedicated Server XL played a vital role in Giga International's story of success. Almost nearly 7 years ago, back in January 2005, it entered it's high end position within our server portfolio, being the most powerful server then. And considering the time span of 7 years - in terms of hardware developements an incredible long time - it was never eliminated from our portfolio.
Given the technical circumstances back then, this server was equipped with sensational 2GB RAM, an Intel Pentium IV 3,0 Ghz processor and hyperthreading technology, as well as a 250GB harddisk. It's hardware never changed and the server operates frontline, until nowadays. Like a true gentleman, it never changed it's style and elegance.
The dedicated server XL was built and configured by Giga International for their customers ever since in a number of several hundred machines.During the following years we introduced the DUAL-Core and even QUAD-Core servers with a multitude of RAM and harddisk capacity.
But, it took well over 4 years, until in Spring 2009 a new dedicated server model, the Core i7, ruled out the model XL for being the most popular server ever rented (Nonetheless, this record could not be kept for such a long time, since it was broken by it's successor, the even more popular Dedicated Server 6-Core).
What makes this dedicated root server, which requires - unlike to the virtual servers - to be individually built for each customer and connected in our datacenter, so special and so unique that it was kept on the hosters product portfolio for 7 years, and is still remains to be contineously requested and ordered on a daily basis by our clients?
One of the reasons might be it's Intel Processor with hyperthreading, which features a technology that was ground breaking back then, but which also still satisfies the demands of most applications using it for a 'Dual Core' substitute. Or maybe it is the fact, that it's random access memory with 2GB still suffices for each LINUX distribution and even supports the latest resource consuming WINDOWS operating systems.
Or pretty simple, it might be the incredible low price, due to the depreciation of hardware costs, of 44.99 EUR per month for a self operated server, including electric power, air condition and unlimited traffic which makes it so attractive.
However, maybe it is the charm of this little root server legend, which was placed into service shortly after the foundation of Giga International and which has ever since supported the raise and expansion of Giga International. Likewise any customer who enjoyed ordering and using one of these appliances until today.
Retain one of these budget servers and experience yourself the incredible performance our 'oldie' is still able to proof. Reserve this little symbol of 'nostalgia' during the last remaining days of it's tenure, because once vanished from our portfolio, it will not ever return.

Der Dedicated Server XL war viele Jahre, ja, fast schon ein Jahrzehnt lang ein Teil der Erfolgsgeschichte von Giga-Hosting.
Vor ziemlich genau 7 Jahren, nämlich im Januar 2005, eroberte er als Highend-System, als leistungsstärkster Server unserer Serverflotte, seinen Platz in unserem Portfolio. Und obwohl eine Zeitspanne von 7 Jahren im Bereich der schnelllebigen Hardware-Branche eine unvorstellbar lange Zeit ist, ließ sich unser XL-Server seither nicht mehr aus unserem Portfolio hinausdrängen. Mit für damalige Verhältnisse sagenhaften 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher, einem Intel Pentium IV Prozessor mit 3,0 Ghz und Hyperthreading-Technologie sowie einer 250 GB Festplatte steht er bis heute seinen Mann - die Hardware hat sich seither niemals geändert; wie ein echter Gentleman ändert er seinen Stil und seine Eleganz nie.
Der Dedicated Server XL wurde seither von Giga-Hosting mit Stückzahlen in der Größenordnung von mehreren hundert Maschinen gebaut und für seine Kunden konfiguiert.
Im Laufe der Jahre folgten Dual-Core und Quad-Core Server mit einem Vielfachen an RAM und Festplattenkapazität. Doch es brauchte über 4 Jahre, bis im Frühling des Jahres 2009 mit dem Dedicated Server Corei7 ein neues Servermodell bei Giga-Hosting erschien, welches dem XL-Server schließlich den Rang als meist-vermietetes Servermodell abjagen sollte (Der Dedicated Server Corei7 konnte diesen Rekord allerdings nicht mehr so lange halten, er wurde durch seinen Nachfolger, den Dedicated Server 6-Core, nochmals übertroffen).
Was macht den Dedicated Server XL, einen Rootserver, der im Gegensatz zu einem V-Server noch tatsächlich für jeden Kunden einzeln gebaut und als dedizierte Maschine im Rechenzentrum angeschlossen und betrieben wird, nun so besonders und so einzigartig, dass er sich 7 Jahre lang in der Produktpalette eine Hosters halten konnte und selbst heute noch Tag für Tag von neuen Kunden nachgefragt und bestellt wird?
Vielleicht ist es die Tatsache, dass sein Intel-Prozessor mit Hyperthreading über eine Technologie verfügt, die damals bahnbrechend war, aber selbst heute noch den Ansprüchen vieler Applikationen als "Dual-Core-Ersatz" gerecht wird. Vielleicht ist es die Tatsache, dass sein Arbeitsspeicher mit 2 GB RAM für alle Linux-Distributionen und selbst für die neuesten, speicherhungrigen Windows-Betriebssysteme noch ausreichend dimensioniert ist. Oder vielleicht ist es auch schlicht sein Preis, der - weil die Hardware für Giga-Hosting natürlich längst abgeschrieben ist - mit 44,99 EUR pro Monat inklusive Strom, Klimatisierung und unlimitiert Traffic für eine eigene Maschine unglaublich niedrig ist.
Vielleicht ist es aber auch der Charme einer kleinen Legende, die bereits kurze Zeit nach der Gründung von Giga-Hosting als Rootserver zum Einsatz kam und seither Jahr für Jahr den Aufstieg und das Wachstum von Giga-Hosting miterlebt und mitunterstützt hat. Genau wie jeder Kunde, der in den Genuss kam, eines dieser Geräte zu bestellen und bis heute zu nutzen.

Additional Upstream: 10 Gbit/s Level 3
This winter we are going to expand our upstreams with an additional, high-quality carrier.
In addition to the already existing, extremely reliable connections via M-Net and Telia Sonera (10 Gbit/s each) there will be yet a third 10 Gbit/s connection in our datacenter available from February 2012 on. With it we're investing in a new level of redundancy for our datacenter customers. In the most unlikely event that a fibercable is going to be damaged by a excarvator or somehow else, our clients would not even notice any constraints. The two other glassfiber connections would be taking over, as in such case our high end CISCO-equipment would route the traffic automatically and without interruptions of service.
The new carrier Level 3 is widely known for his quality. Being a TIER1-carrier just like Telia Sonera it features a total of around 100 000 fiber miles worldwide. Thus, Level 3 is considered as the biggest and best-linked carrier in the world. Besides the excellent European network of Level 3 it's especially the American continent which is connected very well by the U.S. company. This makes Level 3 to the ideal choice for us, because we already have Telia Sonera as upstream carrier which is connected to 90% of all european broadbandnetworks directly. Level 3 serves 18 of world's top 20 telecom carriers.
For our customers that means - besides the formerly mentioned redundancy - that they benefit from an even broader internet bandwidth, a remarkably improved worldwide routing by using three parallel upstreams and last but definitely not least, a much better price in regards to traffic.
Further, we will offer more upstreams and peerings in the near future.

Noch in diesem Winter werden wir unsere Upstreams um einen weiteren, qualitativ hochwertigen Carrier erweitern.
Voraussichtlich im Februar wird neben den beiden bereits vorhandenen, äußerst zuverlässigen Anbindungen via M-Net und Telia Sonera (jeweils 10 Gbit/s) eine weitere 10 Gbit/s-Anbindung im Rechenzentrum verfügbar sein. Damit investieren wir in ein drittes Redundanzlevel für unsere Rechenzentrumskunden. Sollte beispielsweise der seltene Fall auftreten, dass eine Glasfaserleitung durch einen Bagger oder anderweitig beschädigt wird, spüren unsere Kunden hiervon nichts: Die Internetanbindung wird durch nunmehr gleich zwei weitere Glasfasern aufrecht erhalten. Unser hochwertiges CISCO-Equipment routet in einem solchen Fall automatisch und ausfallfrei den Traffic um.
Der neue Carrier Level 3 steht weltweit für höchste Qualität. Genau wie Telia Sonera ist als er als TIER1-Carrier "upstreamfrei" und verfügt über rund 160.000 Kilometer eigene Glasfaserkabel weltweit. Damit ist Level 3 wohl der größte und am Besten vernetzte Carrier weltweit. Neben einem exzellenten europäischen Netz ist insbesondere der gesamte amerikanische Kontinent von dem US-Unternehmen bestens konnektiert. Damit stellt Level 3 für Giga-Hosting.biz eine hervorragende Ergänzung zu dem bereits bestehenden Carrier Telia Sonera dar, an den über 90 % aller europäischen Bandbreitennetze direkt angeschlossen sind. Level 3 versorgt 18 der TOP 20 Telefongesellschaften auf der Welt.
Für unsere Kunden bedeutet dies - neben der bereits eingangs erwähnten Redundanz - noch mehr zur Verfügung stehende Internetbandbreite, ein noch besseres, weltweites Routing durch den parallelen Einsatz der Upstreams von M-Net, Telia Sonera und Level 3 sowie letztlich einen noch besseren Trafficpreis.
Darüber hinaus werden in Kürze weitere Upstreams und Peerings folgen.
Im Giga-Hosting Buero: Surfen mit 2 x 1 Gbit/s
Unlängst hat die in die Jahre gekommene DSL-Anbindung unserer Büroräume ein sehr angenehmes Upgrade erfahren:
Nach professioneller Planung und tatkräftiger Umsetzung durch unsere beiden mit diesem Projekt befassten Mitarbeiter wurden sämtliche Büros von Giga-Hosting nun an die Highspeed-Anbindung unseres Rechenzentrums konnektiert. Damit surfen nun alle Mitarbeiter - eine passende Netzwerkkarte vorausgesetzt - mit 1 Gbit/s , und zwar synchron im Down- als auch im Upstream. Denkt man an die Entstehungszeit des Internets, wie wir es heute kennen, in den 90er oder auch frühen 2000er Jahren zurück, in denen das sekundenlange Laden eines einzelnen Bildchens im Browser oft zur Geduldsprobe wurde und gar das Downloaden eines kleinen Filmes nahezu unmöglich war, wird einem die Dimension dieser Geschwindigkeit erst richtig bewusst.
Die Telekom kann gleichwohl aufatmen, denn sie wird uns nicht als jahrelangen DSL-Kunden verlieren. Die alte DSL-Leitung haben wir nämlich nicht gekündigt, sondern als "Fallback"-Leitung konfiguiert: Sollte einmal aus irgend einem Grund unsere neue, schnelle Büroanbindung ausfallen, so erkennt das unser - übrigens ebenfalls redundant ausgelegter - Router und schaltet vollautomatisch auf die DSL-Leitung um. In einem solchen, unwahrscheinlichen Ausfallszenario surfen unsere Mitarbeiter zwar wieder kurzzeitig langsamer, bleiben aber immer online und für unsere Kunden zu 100 % erreichbar.
Manch einer mag sich nun fragen: Wozu braucht man im Büro eine Anbindung von 1 Gbit/s an das Internet? Die Antwort darauf ist einfach: Gar nicht. Wir haben sie einfach, ganz getreu unserem Motto "Think bigger, think Giga". 
Eine Selbstverständlichkeit ist es, dass von dieser neuen, schnellen Anbindung auch unsere Gäste - Rechenzentrumsbesucher, Kunden, Partner, Freunde - profitieren. In unserer Empfangslongue, die derzeit geplant und vorbereitet wird, wird es neben dem klassischen WLAN und LAN-Anschluss auch einen internetfähigen Fernseher geben, mit dem unsere Besucher via Drahtlostastatur- und Maus auch ohne Notebook, Smartphone und Co bei einer Tasse Kaffee stets gemütlich im Bilde bleiben werden.
100 % Freecooling in June!
It's summer in Munich. Although today it's a rather rainy day and the temperature isn't higher than 15 degrees during the day, it's still June and it's still one of the warmest months in the year.
With respect to the facts mentioned above it seems even more remarkable to me that both of our fully redundant air conditioning systems located on the roof of our datacenter are working in the freecooling mode (100% freecooling) right now.
This freecooling mode means that there's not running a single compressor in the cooling chillers to cool down around 1500 servers in our datacenter today. The whole cooling process is done by using the cooler air from outside to cool down the water of our refrigerant curcuit. There are some pumps and ventilators left which are responsible for transporting the water and air from outside into our datacenter. But nothing else, no more power consumption.
As there's not running any compressor in our chillers at all, we're saving lots of energy. There's no doubt that we usualy save this energy during the winter and during the colder months in autumn and spring, too. However, our modern and high-quality cooling units are good enough to save this energy even during the summer - just like they are doing right now. And these savings are pure money what we redirect to our customers by making great prices and providing excellent services with highly-educated personal on site. It's a typical "win-win-situation". But in this case, we have 3 winners: The customers, the datacenter and our environment.
Number of the month: 22
This time the number of the month represents the number of our 22 state-of-the-art Rittal racks which have been set up for the new colocation servers of our customers.
Each of those 22 Rittal racks is equipped with lockable doors and additional roof ventilation. We have installed these racks during the last months in addition to our existing tower racks and blade racks to be prepared for the increasing demand for server space in our datacenter in 2011.

Number of the month: 1000
Until now we have never presented a "number of the month" in our blog, but I think February is a good month to start with it. This "number of the month" gives us the chance to reveal some more details about our company and our products by using hard facts instead of just telling anything. And, in my opinion, there do exist some really interesting facts which can be presented by using numbers in a very nice way.
Indeed, there are even two reasons why the number of the month February is 1000. At first, I chose this number because there are more than 1000 dedicated server systems up and running in our datacenter so far. Actually, we crossed this line around half a year ago and we're already heading towards the line of 1500 servers. But as there hasn't been a "number of the month" special yet, I didn't want to miss the event of having crossed the number of 1000 servers. =)
Moreover, and this is much more news-worthy, we just achieved the milestone of maintaining more than 1000 v-servers for our customers. It was in the middle of May when we started to offer our new v-server products, thus only a little bit more than 8 months have passed since then. This means that, in average, we have created (and kept) more than 4 new virtual servers for our customers per day since we've been starting to offer them. This number seems quite remarkable to us considering the fact that we hardly do no advertising for our products.
Right now, there are days when we install dozens of new v-servers for our new and existing customers. The number of new server installations increases pretty fast.

Cooling capacity will be expanded by 150%
Continuing growth of our server fleet does not only require more space. It also demands an expansion of our cooling capacities. Such is necessary to eliminate the electrical energy, which is transformed by our servers almost 1:1 into temperature. During the hot months in summer, everyone has certainly already experienced sometimes the rising temperature in a room where even only a simple PC is operated and has wished for a computer system that behaves "neutral" to the generated warmth. Our datacenter holds way above 1.000 constantly operating server systems by now and directly related to this is the warm air exhaust as one can easily imagine.
Even though our present air conditioning could still cope with many more servers, as it had been originally built to handle up to 1500 servers, we intentionally do not want to bring our recent climate control to it's limit. Instead we are commited to guarantee a failure free system operation around the clock for our clients.
This stands to reason that we will launch the second level of our air conditioning, as scheduled during the next 12 weeks and thereby upgrade the present cooling capacity by another 150%. Afterwards we can set up 2.000 additional dedicated machines while the temperature will remain 'cool' in the true meaning of this word.
Just like before, with our first level of climate control, also this second one will be technology- and enegywise top of the notch. With the assistance of free cooling systems mounted on the rooftop of the building, this new extension will equally use the outside air for cooling down the data center. The water temperatures are being therefore adjusted to a level, that even in summer the free cooling remains active. It will therefore not be necessary, during many times, to engage the power consuming mechanical cooling system. Our new climate control will be working extremely efficient in regards to energy. This not only protects the environment and saves costs, but is also beneficiary to our clients as we directly pass on those savings to them. A 24/7 surveillance of all systems via webserver, smoke detector, water intrusion detection and the like is standard of course.
For the expansion of our cooling capacities we will be setting up a completely isolated cooling circuit, which is operating totally independant from the primary one. This means that we do not only lay all the pipes, but all the electrical wiring another time around. Additionally, recirculating air coolers within the data center itself and a new cold water aggregate on the roof of the building will be installed. The result: Two independent, redundant climate systems by all means.In the most unlikely event that one system should fail - regardless why and which part of it - the other one takes over and keeps on running.
That is how we define high availability and a maximum of safety for the servers of our clients. This upgrade requires again a substantial financial investment which we however pleasantly accept to the benefit of our customers. At the same time, the prices of our servers and services are not raised by a single cent.
